IS THE CATHOLIC CHURCH THE ONE TRUE CHURCH?
Is it the “Mother-Church” to which all Protestants must return?
🔔 A claim worth examining:
Catholicism has historically made an exclusive claim:
✅ The Catholic Church is the one true church
✅ “Outside of which there is no salvation” (Catholic Catechism #846)
➡️ In other words, the Catholic Church is presented as the original, the only true expression of Christianity—all others are “separated brethren” who must return to the “Mother Church” to truly be right with God.
💗 Because I respect devoted Catholics and the seriousness of their faith—and because we share basic beliefs (like the identity of Jesus or the power of the crucifixion) I approach this carefully—not casually, not mockingly.
💗 However, love does not avoid hard questions. Love examines them.
➡️The truth is this: Catholicism was the first manmade denomination (religious organization) to develop out of the true Church in this world.
➡️ Protestantism (an exodus out of Catholicism that surged dramatically in the 1500s) was not a breakaway movement from the “true church.” In many cases, it was an effort by sincere believers to return to the original—the doctrines, practices, and traditions of authentic, first century Christianity.
⚖️ That raises a serious question:
How do you discern members of the true Church?
➡️ Does Scripture give defining qualities?
🔦 What Scripture is explicit about:
✅ The Church is not merely an organization with a membership role—it is a spiritual body formed by Jesus Christ Himself.
🔦 Acts 2:47 (KJV)
And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.🔦 Matthew 16:18
Jesus said to Simon, “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”
➡️ Jesus did not say, “I will build a religious institution headquartered in one city.”
He said, “I will build My church.” The Builder is Jesus Christ.
The Greek word translated church is ekklesia (pronounced ek-klay-SEE’-ah) meaning “called-out ones)—those “called . . . out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9).
🤔So, how did the Lord “build” His church; how did He “add” to the church daily? How did He “call them out of darkness”?
🎯 By spiritual rebirth!
🔦 The prophet Ezekiel foretold what would happen in the New Covenant:
“And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. And I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you shall keep My judgments and do them” (Ezk. 36:26-27).
🔦 The prophet Jeremiah foretold what would happen in the New Covenant:
“But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more” (Jer. 31:33-34).
🎯 So members of the true church know the Lord in a personal relationship, and they have received an internal transformation: inviting Him to live in their hearts (Eph. 3:17).
✅ The Church is the Body of Christ—those made alive by the Spirit in the ways just mentioned, not verified by a church membership role, or made official by paperwork.
🔦 1 Corinthians 12:13
“For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.”🔦 Ephesians 1:22–23
“And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”
➡️ Again, the true Church is Christ’s body—not a single organization, but an organism—a living body of believers made up of born-again Catholics, born-again Protestants, and born-again non-denominational Christians.
🗝️ Not all who profess Christianity (Catholic, Protestant, or non-denominational) possess a true relationship with the Lord Jesus. This is KEY!!!
🔔 The problem with an exclusive institutional claim
If one institution claims: “We alone are the true church—outside of us there is no salvation,” then salvation becomes tied to a location, a hierarchy, or a membership.
But Scripture ties salvation to a Person.
🗝️ Jesus is the Door—not an institution.
🔦 John 10:9
“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.”
✅ Jesus did not say: “Enter a religious system and you will be saved.”
He said: “Enter by Me.”
✅ Jesus is the Mediator—not a denominational demand.
🔦 1 Timothy 2:5
“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.”
➡️ If Jesus Christ is the Door and Jesus Christ is the Mediator…
then no organization can claim to be the exclusive gateway.
🔦 What the true Church looks like in Scripture
The Bible gives us heaven’s definition—not man’s.
✅ The truest “church registry” is not kept on earth.
🔦 Hebrews 12:23
“To the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect”
✅ Membership in the true Church is spiritual—knowing God and being known by God.
🔦 John 17:1
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”🔦 2 Timothy 2:19
“Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: ‘The Lord knows those who are His,’ and ‘Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.’”
➡️ The true Church is recognized by the Lord Himself—not merely by denominational authorities.
🔔 The most important issue is this: Are you BORN AGAIN?
This is where we must be honest—and where theological sparring becomes foolish and futile.
You can be:
✅ Catholic
✅ Protestant
✅ Orthodox
✅ Non-denominational
…and still miss the one thing Jesus said you must have.
🔦 John 3:3
“Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’”🔦 John 3:5
“Jesus answered, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’”
➡️ The greatest divide is not Catholic vs. Protestant.
It is born again vs. not born again.
It’s the difference between the “professing church” or the “possessing church.”

There are some Catholics who have truly been born again and many who have not.
There are some Protestants and non-denominational Christians who have truly been born again and many who have not.
Many depend on organizational affiliation to feel secure in salvation. Truly spiritual and enlightened individuals depend on a personal relationship with Jesus to be their security.
So, the inevitable conclusions . . .
💗 LOVE JESUS. LOVE OTHERS. BE BORN AGAIN.
After watching so many doctrinal debates, I’m persuaded of this:
🔔 It is easy to spar.
🗝️ It is better—and holier—and more mature—to call people to Jesus.
Because in the end, “the simplicity of Christ” conveys a much simpler message:
🗝️ Jesus saves (Eph. 2:8, 2 Cor. 11:3).
🔦 1 John 5:12
“He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

🪞 Final reflections:
✖️ This isn’t about disrespecting Catholics or Protestants.
✖️ This isn’t about mocking history.
✖️ This isn’t about disregarding sincerity (for many are sincere).
✅ It’s about refusing to replace Jesus Christ with an institution.
✅ It’s about correctly interpreting history.
✅ It’s about letting Scripture define the Church.
✅ And above all—it’s about calling every heart to the Savior.
🔔 Let us speak with love.
⚖️ Let us test everything carefully.
🗝️ Let us emphasize what matters most:
LOVING JESUS… AND THE WONDER OF BEING BORN AGAIN.
(All scriptures are from the New King James Version unless otherwise marked.)
